The airport was inaugurated in 1945 and in 1990 it was designed as Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. It is located in the Maia region, about 11 kilometers from Porto. It is one of the bases of the low cost airline Ryanair and has great recognition due to several awards won over the years. In 2016 it won the award for the best airport in Europe.

The airport has only one terminal on the third floor. If you have checked baggage, you must hand it in at the counter of the airline you are travelling with, in the departures area. If you are travelling with hand luggage only and have already checked in online or at the airport check-in machines, just go to security. You will be informed in advance about the check-in options for your flight.

Offered services

The airport has a great structure: cafés, restaurants, ATM's and currency exchange houses before the security control. It also has pharmacy, post and turistic information centre.

There are 4 playgrounds. Three of them at boarding gate nº10, 32 and 35 and the other is on the arrival areal (floor 0). There is also an space with a library and entertaining games for children from 3 to 12 years old opened from 9:30 a.m to 5.30 p.m on the arrivals area. All these playgrounds are free.

On the third floor you can enjoy the ANA Lounge (by payment or for members) with sofa areas, magazines, international newspapers, TV, snacks, drinks, computers and printers.

Internet access at Porto airport is free, through registration on the VINCI Airports WIFI network. There are also airlines available for mobile phone charging.

Transportation options

The transportation options to get to the airport are metro, shuttle, buses, taxi and car.

Metro

The trip to the airport using the metro takes aproximately 25 minutes for less than 2,45€. The station is on the E (purple) line, it's called Airport and it starts at the Dragon Stadium. At the exit of the metro station it is about 500 meters on foot to the Porto airport.

To go to the center from the airport, the metro station is located on the -1 floor of the airport, which can be accessed using the elevator opposite the arrivals terminal. The metro is charged according to the zones. The ticket from the airport to the city center also costs €2.45, but includes a top-up fee of €0.60. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices at the airport, the metro station or at the tourist balconies in the arrivals terminal. The station is well signposted at the airport.

The metro's operating schedule is from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. (next day).

Shuttle

A transfer service is also offered by the low cost company GoIn. In addition to the collective transport from the Porto airport to the center, they offer the door-to-door option, which can take you directly to your hotel. Prices start at 5€ and there are connections approximately every hour. It can be purchased online and the round trip option has a discount. 100 Rutas also offers the same service from 6€, with the option of private transport and city tour.

If your final destiny is not Oporto, some bus companies offer transport to: -Goin 'Porto connect the principal areas of Oporto to the airport. -Airport Shuttle connects the airport with Oporto, Brafa and Guimarães. -Getbus connects Guimarães and Braga to the airport. -Barqense connects Ponte de Barca, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte de Lima y Viana do Castelo. -OVNITUR Viajes connects Póvoa de Varzim, Esposende, Viana do Castelo, Lanheses and Ponte de Lima. -TRANSDEV connects the airport to the central highway of Porto. -AUTNA connects the airport to spanish cities Vigo and Valencia.

Autobuses

Porto's airport has several bus lines that operate from the airport to various points in the city. The buses are operated for companies like STCP or Rosende and there are several itineraries, destinies and schedules. Most of them depart every 30 minuts, from 6 a.m until midnight. The buses that travel around the city are 601, 602 and 604, also 119 and 3M and during the night 105N.

Depending on the bus and the route, the price may be slightly different. However, a trip to the city should not cost more than 2,40€, plus €0.60 for the reloadable card, if you need it. Tickets with rechargeable cards must be purchased at the ticket offices in the arrival terminal of the airport. You can also purchase a single ticket by paying directly to the driver in cash for 1,95€ on SCTP buses (601, 602 and 604).

The bus station is located next to arrival terminal in the Porto airport. If you get lost, the bus station is well signposted at the airport and you can also go to tourist counters.

Taxi

A taxi from Porto airport is the simplest and most efficient transoport to the city. Most taxis are beige but can also be black with green tops. They are modern, comfortable and always available from the airport taxi stand. The green light at the top indicates the taxi is free and many of the drivers are fluent in English.

The fare is calculated according to a taximeter, but in normal traffic conditions it is approximately 23€. The base rate is 2,50€. Rates are also higher at night (between 9:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.) as well as on religious holidays, bank holidays and weekends, so expect to pay 20% more if your trip is in one of these periods.

Car

If you are waiting for a friend or some member of your family at the airport you should know that there is a Kiss & Fly zone next to the terminal, it is a zone where you can be parked with the car during 10 minuts for free. In the airport you will find 5 parking lots available if you need to leave your car there: P0, P1, P4, P6 and P9.

P0 and P1 are quick parking lots and the first 15 minutes can cost around 0,60 € to 0,80 €. P4 is located in front of the cargo terminal. P6 is located next to rental cars terminal. P9 is near the airport hotel. You can also use valet services (pick up and park your car by profesional drivers).

Types of airport parkings

Valet (Pickup at terminal)

The fastest and most comfortable way to park in the airport. The driver will be waiting for you at the scheduled time at the terminal. At your return, call the driver, who will deliver your car to you.

Shuttle

The cheapest option: free 5-15 minutes transfer to the terminal. A free shuttle will bring you from the parking lot to the terminal and back when you return.

Inside the airport

The official parking inside the airport facilities. It is normally at walking distance from the terminal, but cheaper long stay parkings sometimes require short transfers.
