Horta was an independent municipality until 1904, when it was annexed to Barcelona. It was also known as San Juan de Horta. The name comes from the Horta family, owner of the territory from 1036 to 1260. It was inhabited by nobles and merchants from the 14th century.
It belongs to the Horta-Guinardó district, the third largest in Barcelona. Overtaken by Sants-Montjuïc and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. It is located between the districts of Gràcia and Nou Barris.
