Bilbao Airport is an international airport located 12 kilometres from the city of Bilbao, in the Basque Country (Bizkaia, Euskadi), with its facilities forming part of the municipality of Sondika (Sondica) to the southwest, and the municipality of Loiu (Lujua) to the northeast. It is the most important airport in the far north of Spain.
The old terminal (now used as offices), the cargo terminal and most of the airport services are in the municipality of Sondica, while the new terminal, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is in the municipality of Lujua.
This passenger terminal handles both domestic and international flights and is commonly known as "La Paloma" (The Pigeon) because of the appearance of a bird taking flight.
There are several options for getting to Bilbao Airport: taxi, bus, car hire or use of private car or metro, but the fastest way is by car.
Bizkaibus A3247 buses run every 15 minutes to and from the airport and the journey time is 25 minutes. In the direction of the city, the stops Alameda Recalde 14, Moyùa Plaza and Gran Vía 74 are in the city centre. The bus station is on the west side of the city, close to the Athletic Bilbao stadium and, above all, close to the San Mamés metro station.
The price of a single journey is 3 euros per person and can be purchased on board from the driver or at the ticket office in the airport terminal or bus station. The service is available from 05:15, with the first trip to the airport, until midnight, when the last bus leaves the airport.
The approximate taxi fare from Bilbao to the airport is 25-30€. The journey takes between 10-20 minutes and can vary depending on traffic. Intercity, night and public holiday fares are usually higher than daytime fares.
You can find taxi ranks at the airport or make a reservation.
