Luís de Camões Square is located in Chiado, in the parish of Misericórdia.
Near the square are the well-known café A Brasileira, Teatro da Trindade and Bairro Alto.
Its name is due to the fact that it has in the centre a statue in honour of the poet Luís Vaz de Camões.
Camões lived in the 16th century. He is considered one of the greatest Portuguese personalities and was a major influence in Lusophone literature.
Besides being a poet, Camões was a soldier and navigator of the Discoveries.
He stood out for being ahead of his time and his main work is Os Lusíadas.
In the square it's also located the Brasilian Consulate.
