Lyon is a city in the south-east of France, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of which it is the capital, in the centre of the Rhône department. Former capital of Gaul during the Roman Empire, Lyon is now the third largest city in France in terms of population after Paris and Marseille. It is a geographical crossroads between the north and south of France and Europe, located between the Massif Central and the Alps. In addition, the city has four districts that are internationally recognised for their architectural beauty and are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Therefore, with the city's charm attracting many tourists in addition to the large numbers of residents and the transient population within the municipality due to the activity zone it represents, on-street parking in Lyon can be very difficult.
Lyon uses a differentiation between two zones for parking charges in the heart of the city. A zone called Presto, which is short term and located in Lyon's hypercentre. Parking is allowed for up to one hour at a rate of 2€ per hour. However, parking is free from 7pm to 9am on Sundays and public holidays. The second zone, called Tempo, is cheaper at a rate of 4€ for three hours, which is the maximum duration. The same free rate applies on Sundays and public holidays and throughout August.
With a population of more than 522.000 inhabitants, people passing through on their way to work and many tourists, parking in Lyon is in high demand and can therefore be complicated due to the limited number of spaces. This is why, in addition, there are also public car parks in the heart of the capital of the Gauls. They are spread throughout the city of Lyon, offering a wide range of possibilities. We therefore recommend that you compare the different offers and book your parking on the Parkimeter website or application to organise your visit to Lyon without stress.
The city of Lyon has always been an extremely important place in French history. From its stature as the capital of Gaul during the Roman Empire to the capital of the Resistance during the Second World War, Lyon has an internationally recognised cultural and historical heritage that represents the French past. In addition to this historical mark, Lyon has developed its own culture over the years and in particular a real gastronomic identity with numerous specialities and world renowned chefs.
As previously mentioned, Lyon is a historic French city with an amazing heritage to visit. The first of these is surely the Vieux Lyon district, a true symbol of the city, where the Saint-Jean Cathedral is located. This district is a UNESCO heritage site and bears witness to the city's past. Other symbols of the city, you will be able to see the many typical and unique traboules of Lyon. Many other places and characteristics of Lyon are to be visited, one can quote in particular the Basilica of Fourvière, the place Bellecour, the park of the head of Gold, the museum of Confluences without forgetting obviously the many typical restaurants of Lyon, called bouchon lyonnais, where you will have to eat at least one meal during your visit.
