The Almudena Cathedral was built between 1883 and 1993 and was consecrated on 15 June 1993 by Pope John Paul II during his fourth visit to Spain. It is a cathedral of Catholic worship and the most important religious building in Madrid. ​ The cathedral is located next to the Palacio Real de Madrid, both located on Bailén Street, between Puerta de Toledo and Plaza de España.
